NEWS FROM THE CITY OF WESTON
April 28, 2020

BSO Weston Fire Rescue trucks lined up in a row.
The Census Helps Us During Disasters
The Census Bureau provides data that is critical to emergency planning, preparedness and recovery efforts for all types of emergencies. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Census Bureau is assisting in identifying counties with a large vulnerable population, such as individuals with a disability, frailty or a debilitating health issue. The Census Bureau also aids in measuring the economic impact and recovery efforts throughout the nation. It is important to fill out the census to provide the necessary funding for your community for the next 10 years.

As we plan for the new "Weston Way" of physical distancing and facial coverings, along with whatever else the future holds, we continue to monitor and share the latest updates and resources regarding coronavirus in our community at WestonFL.org/Coronavirus.

BSO Weston Cheer Up Hospital Patients
Patients in the hospital with COVID-19 are often there for weeks at a time and cannot have the emotional support of family members by their side due to the virus' contagious nature. In fact, as visitation is scaled back for all patients, BSO wanted to lift their spirits by showing them that their community is thinking of them and they are in our hearts.
Circling the hospital with lights and sirens, displaying all of the apparatus at our disposal - the men and women of the Broward Sheriff's Office Weston District waved and sent their wishes for recovery to those at the Cleveland Clinic Florida and also to everyone around the globe, sick and isolated from their family. You are not alone.
Cleveland Clinic Announces New Research Center Amid COVID-19
On April 22, 2020, Cleveland Clinic announced the establishment of the Center for Global and Emerging Pathogens Research to broaden understanding of emerging pathogens — ranging from Zika virus to SARS-CoV-2 (which causes COVID-19) — and to expedite critically needed treatments and vaccines.

The new center has been in the planning stages for 18 months and will span Lerner Research Institute and the soon-to-open Cleveland Clinic Florida Research and Innovation Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. A team of renowned experts will lead the center to advance research towards diseases such as COVID-19, highly pathogenic influenza, Dengue fever, AIDS and Zika virus-related conditions.

As a result of the coronavirus, households that already were stressed are feeling more so due to unemployment and/or income loss, making children more prone to abuse.
