Aloe, adiós: las afirmaciones de la compañía no tenían pruebas

Es posible que hayas oído hablar del uso de aloe vera para aliviar las quemaduras del sol. Una compañía de Florida afirmó que sus productos de aloe vera podían aliviar el dolor articular y muscular, la diabetes, el reflujo ácido, entre otras afecciones, y que estudios de salud confirmaban sus afirmaciones. Al respecto, la FTC dice que esto no es así. La compañía deberá pagar $537,000 bajo un acuerdo resolutorio con la FTC y deberá dejar de hacer afirmaciones relacionadas con la salud que no estén respaldadas por evidencia científica válida.
De acuerdo con la FTC, NatureCity LLC promocionaba que sus cápsulas comestibles TrueAloe y la mezcla de bebida AloeCran contenían aloe vera procesada, por medio de millones de anuncios publicitarios, en sitios web y en Amazon. Los anuncios de NatureCity LLC mencionaban estudios en humanos y “datos” que confirmaban las propiedades curativas del aloe vera para mejorar una variedad de afecciones de salud graves; sin embargo, la FTC sostiene que esas afirmaciones no estaban respaldadas por evidencia científica válida.
Muchos folletos de NatureCity LLC incluían fotos e historias de clientes satisfechos que afirman haber experimentado un alivio notable del dolor y otras dolencias. Algunos decían que ya no necesitaban medicamentos recetados. La FTC afirma que los folletos no revelaban que, en privado, NatureCity LLC ofrecía a los clientes productos gratuitos o productos con descuento con envío gratuito, si sus testimonios se usaban en materiales publicitarios.
Según el acuerdo resolutorio, NatureCity LLC debe enviar cartas a sus clientes indicando que fue demandada por publicidad engañosa y que entregó a algunos clientes productos y envíos gratuitos a cambio de revisiones favorables.

Si detectas un fraude relacionado con la salud, avisa a la FTC en FTC.gov/queja.

Concientización sobre el fraude de caridad, aquí y en el extranjero

Hoy comienza la Semana Internacional de Concientización sobre el Fraude de Caridad (ICFAW, por su sigla en inglés), un esfuerzo coordinado a nivel internacional para ayudar a las organizaciones de caridad y a los donantes a evitar este tipo de fraude. La FTC se une a esta campaña sumándose a las autoridades estatales que regulan las actividades de las organizaciones de caridad en todo el país, la National Association of State Charities Officials (NASCO), y a colegas del ámbito internacional. Al unir nuestras fuerzas, podemos transmitir información y consejos a más personas y a más organizaciones de caridad. El dinero perdido en manos de falsas organizaciones de caridad y estafadores significa menos dinero en donaciones para ayudar a quienes las necesitan. Y nadie desea que eso suceda, ni aquí ni en el exterior del país.
Los esfuerzos de educación y alcance comunitario de la FTC en este tema están en plena actividad durante todo el año, pero la Semana Internacional de Concientización sobre Fraude de Caridad nos ofrece otra oportunidad de recordarle a la gente cómo hacer para detectar los trucos de los estafadores y cómo evitar hacer donaciones a organizaciones de caridad fraudulentas. Community Input Desired at Open House for Complete Streets Grant Application
The public is invited to provide input on a grant application the City intends to submit to the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization as part of its Complete Streets and other Localized Initiatives Grant Program for city-wide ADA and sidewalk improvements. The Open House will be held Tuesday, October 29th between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.at Weston City Hall.

Halloween Funfest at Broward County Animal Care
A special Halloween FunFest will be held on Saturday, October 26th, from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m., at Broward County Animal Care, 2400 SW 42nd Street, in Fort Lauderdale. Children will receive a special Animal Care Halloween bag and be invited to “trick or treat” and enjoy a special Pumpkin Patch. Adoptable dogs and cats will also be featured. All adoption fees will be waived include spaying/neutering; vaccinations, County license tag and a microchip!

Weston Sports Extravaganza at Weston Regional Park on November 2nd at 5:30 p.m.
Interact with the many leagues that offer league sports and activities in Weston’s parks. Weston Sports Alliance members, along with Weston Tennis Center and Kidokinetics, will showcase their activities at the Sports Extravangaza, starting at 5:30 p.m. Come out to learn about all of the activities that Weston offers to be ACTIVE. It all takes place at Regional Park on soccer field #8, near the event stage.
Come dressed in you best costume for a night of festivities you won’t forget as the Weston YMCA stirs up a little toil and trouble with a haunted house and trunks full of candy! There will be photo ops, spooky spectacular entertainment and more. Event is open to the public -- you do not have to be a member of the Y to attend.
