Translate this Email The summer brings hot weather and rain that provide a perfect breeding and hatching environment for mosquitoes. As we spend time outdoors, it is important to be proactive to prevent mosquito-borne illnesses. We aim to keep residents, visitors and businesses informed on mosquito mitigation efforts within Sunny Isles Beach. Below you will find information on scheduled treatments and steps you can take to "fight the bite" this summer. City of Sunny Isles Beach Mosquito Treatments The City of Sunny Isles Beach will treat City parks and beach access pathways for mosquitoes on Wednesday, August 12 from 4 - 7 am. The City’s contractor uses gator utility vehicles and backpack foggers to treat the targeted areas. Miami-Dade County Mosquito Treatments Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control will treat streets in Sunny Isles Beach for mosquitoes on Friday, August 14 from 1 - 5 am. Miami-Dade County will deploy two state-of-the-art trucks that provide greater uniform ground coverage to effectively target breeding areas and reduce the mosquito population. These treatments will continue bi-weekly on Friday mornings. *While the trucks are a great tool in mosquito mitigation efforts, they do mimic the sound of a lawnmower. Please do not be alarmed if you hear them.  The larvicide used by the County, VectoBac WG, has been approved by the EPA and is a safe, organic material, and one of the first bacterial larvicides to complete the World Health Organization Pesticide Evaluation Scheme. The EPA has determined VectoBac has no toxicity to people; it can be applied safely to mosquito habitats without a detrimental impact on food, crops or water supplies. While this treatment is safe, pets and humans should remain indoors when the trucks are in your area, as they will pass quickly and the treatment will settle. Other Mosquito Mitigation Efforts Our Building and Code Compliance departments continue to routinely inspect properties for standing water throughout the City to ensure they are compliant with our code. Any findings of non-compliance are addressed to the full extent of our authority. In cases where a remedy is not immediately available, that area is treated to mitigate the breeding of mosquitoes. In addition to the above, the City is taking extra measures by treating both our stormwater retention areas and our drainage catch basins throughout the City to prohibit mosquitoes from breeding.   What You Can Do to Help In addition to all that we are doing, we are asking our residents to be proactive as well. Follow the recommendations from the Florida Department of Health “Drain and Cover” Program. Also, help us identify any areas of concern. Standing Water If you see standing water that has not been removed within 24 hours, please report it to our Code Compliance Department. You can report a complaint or area of concern online at sibfl.net/codecomplaints. If you have any technical questions regarding the removal of standing water, call the Building Department at 305.792.1735.   Protect Yourself We will continue to work towards minimizing mosquito breeding in Sunny Isles Beach. You can take these proactive measures yourself: Drain standing water wherever it collects. Cover bare skin with clothing and repellent. Cover doors and windows with screens.
