Share               Donate February 4, 2020 Celebrate Black History Month at the Library Join us for a variety of programs and events throughout February in honor of Black History Month, including dance, music, arts and crafts, movies, storytimes and more!  All ages welcome. Black History Celebration Join us for an afternoon of dance, poetry and storytelling featuring the MDPLS Storytime Troupe and JDiva's Dance Company.  Saturday, February 8, 2 - 4 p.m. Arcola Lakes Branch Afro Dance Enjoy the rhythm of live percussion instruments as you exercise and strengthen your body during this dynamic workshop led by dance instructor Andres Arevalo. Suitable for all skill levels. Best for ages 8 years and up. Saturday, February 8, 2 p.m. Homestead Branch Afro-Peruvian Tap  Inspired by Afro-Peruvian culture, learn how to make rhythms with your feet and create choreography sequences to express yourself with freedom and creativity. The 2020 Census is coming!  Every 10 years the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a nationwide count to determine the number of people living in the United States.  In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census.  You can respond in one of three ways:  online, by phone or by mail.  Remember, if you don't have a computer or internet access at home, you can always visit your local library to complete the Census online. It's important that everyone be counted because census results will determine how billions of dollars in federal funding are distributed to our community for hospitals, schools, roads and other vital programs. Tuesday, February 11, 3:30 p.m. Bay Harbor Islands Branch ARTS & CRAFTS The Life of the Honeybee and Beeswax Candle Rolling Learn about the honeybee's life cycle and beeswax production, then create 100% beeswax candles. AUTHOR VISIT MDPLS Author Series with M Dorsett Join M Dorsett as she presents her latest book, The Lion and the Elephant, a story about friendship and the journey of life, plus enjoy an art activity inspired by the book. Saturday, February 8, 11 a.m. Lemon City Branch AUTHOR VISIT MDPLS Author Series with Lew Paper Join Lew Paper as he presents his latest book, In the Cauldron: Terror, Tension, and the American Ambassador's Struggle to Avoid Pearl Harbor, which tells the story of Joseph Grew, America's ambassador to Japan, and his unrelenting effort to avoid the war he saw coming. It's a story filled with hope and heartache and complex and fascinating characters. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. You'll be doing basic choreographed steps that will have you looking like a pro on the dance floor! No dance experience necessary. Please dress comfortably. Leather sole shoes suggested.  All ages. Children under 13 should be accompanied by an adult.
