Join Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue and Safe Kids of Broward County for a bingo night with a learning twist focused on bicycle safety. The event will take place on Friday, May 12 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Weston Community Center. Certified bike helmet fitters will be available to assist families with proper helmet fitting (there will be limited helmets to give away, but bring your own to make sure it fits correctly). In fact, did you know that Weston residents receive up to a 20% discount on flood insurance policies as a result of the City’s Class 6 rating in the National Flood Insurance Program?  View Guide Here » New Lane Now Open Royal Palm Boulevard & Weston Road Intersection As construction continues on the intersection of Royal Palm Boulevard and Weston Road, motorists traveling through this past week were pleased that the new third left turn lane (from westbound Royal Palm Boulevard to southbound Weston Road) is now open. As the overnight paving continued, barricades were removed, and lane striping was completed, and the morning rush should now be easier. The project is still in progress, as new mast arms will be installed and the timing of the traffic signals will need to be adjusted as drivers adjust to the new traffic pattern.  Learn More » 55+ Club May Activity Calendar The 55+ Club, programming for social seniors, provides a range of activities each week, with luncheon outings, afternoon movies, bus trips, lectures, board game days, and more.  Unscrupulous tax preparers may tempt taxpayers into fraud

Unscrupulous tax preparers and tax fraud promoters make big promises – and charge high fees – but taxpayers are legally responsible for what's on their return. Taxpayers should use only reputable tax professionals and know what is on their tax return. Although scammers are most active during filing season, they operate year-round, and taxpayers should always be on the lookout for these abusive schemes.

Employee Retention Credit claims - Taxpayers should be aware of aggressive pitches from scammers who promote large refunds related to the Employee Retention Credit. With ads all over the internet, social media and radio, fraudulent promoters try to con ineligible people to claim the credit. These promotions have false information about who’s eligible and how the IRS calculates the credit. Some of these ads exist solely to collect fees from the taxpayer or to take the taxpayer's personal info and steal their identity.

False fuel tax credit claims - The fuel tax credit is meant for off-highway business and farming use and is not available to most taxpayers. Unscrupulous tax return preparers and promoters are enticing taxpayers to inflate their refunds by erroneously claiming the credit.

Schemes aimed at high-income filers - These include schemes like abusing charitable remainder trusts and monetized installment sales.

Bogus tax avoidance strategies - This includes abusive micro-captive insurance arrangements and syndicated conservation easements.

Schemes with international elements - These schemes include a variety of tax evasion strategies including things like: 

Hiding assets in offshore banks, brokerage accounts, digital asset accounts and nominee entities or in accounts holding digital assets, such as cryptocurrency.

Attempting to avoid U.S. tax by contributing to foreign individual retirement arrangements in Malta or potentially other host countries. The participants in these transactions typically lack any local connection to the host country.

Participating in a purported insurance arrangement with a Puerto Rican or other foreign corporation in which the U.S. business owner has a financial interest. These arrangements lack many of the attributes of legitimate insurance.

The IRS will challenge the purported tax benefits from these types of transactions and impose penalties. The IRS Criminal Investigation Division is always on the lookout for promoters and participants of these types of schemes. Taxpayers should think twice before including questionable arrangements on their tax returns.

Hay mucha expectación en torno a la inteligencia artificial (IA) en estos días. Los ciberdelincuentes se están aprovechando del interés de las personas en la IA para difundir malware dañino a través de anuncios en línea.

Los delincuentes publican anuncios falsos de herramientas de IA y otro software en sitios de redes sociales y motores de búsqueda. Estos ciberdelincuentes astutos pueden evadir la detección por parte de sistemas diseñados para descubrir publicidad maliciosa. También pueden evadir el software antivirus.

Si haces clic en un anuncio malicioso, terminas en un sitio clonado que descarga malware en tu dispositivo. Pero algunos anuncios te llevan al software real y descargan el malware a través de una “puerta trasera”, lo que hace que sea difícil saber que fue pirateado. Luego, los delincuentes podrían robar tu información y venderla a otros piratas informáticos en la web oscura, u obtener acceso a tus cuentas en línea y estafar a otros.

Entonces, ¿cómo puedes evitar hacer clic en anuncios maliciosos que instalan malware?

No hagas clic en los anuncios para descargar software. Si ves un anuncio de software que despierta tu interés, no hagas clic en él. En lugar de eso, anda al sitio web escribiendo la dirección.

Si no conoces la dirección del sitio web, búscala. Pero recuerda que los estafadores también colocan anuncios en los motores de búsqueda. Aparecerán en la parte superior de la página de resultados de búsqueda y pueden tener una etiqueta que dice “Anuncio” o “Patrocinado”. Desplázate más allá de esos para llegar a los resultados de tu búsqueda.

Los anuncios maliciosos pueden evadir el software antivirus, pero aún así es una buena idea asegurarte de que el software de seguridad, el sistema operativo y el navegador de Internet de tu computadora y tu teléfono estén actualizados. Y activa las actualizaciones automáticas para mantenerte al día con las protecciones más recientes.

Si tienes problemas, sigue estos pasos para eliminar malware o recuperar una cuenta pirateada.
