City of Weston

NEWS FROM THE CITY OF WESTON
December 20, 2022
 ‌  ‌  ‌
Next Regular City Commission Meeting: Tuesday, January 17, 2023
On Saturday, December 24, millions around the country will leave a plate of cookies and glass of milk out for Santa Claus as he travels the world on a reindeer-led sleigh, delivering gifts to children. Others will recognize December 24, Christmas Eve, as Nochebuena and attend midnight mass. While Christmas has incorporated many cultural and regional traditions around the world, the root of the holiday remains centered on commemorating the birth (or nativity) of Jesus Christ, the central figure of Christianity.

The City of Weston wishes all who celebrate the holiday a “Merry Christmas.”
Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga, Kwanzaa, an African American and Pan-African holiday celebrates the importance of the Pan-African family, history, social values, community and culture every December 26 through January 1. In celebration, families and communities organize activities around the Nguzo Saba - the Seven Principles: Umoja (unity), Kujichagulia (self-determination), Ujima (collective works and responsibility), Ujamaa (cooperative economics), Nia (purpose), Kuumba (creativity), and Imani (Faith). The celebration continues with food, music, dance poetry, and narrative and ends with a day dedicated to reflecting and recommitting to the Seven Principles and additional cultural values.

To all who celebrate, the City of Weston wishes you a joyful and meaningful Kwanzaa.

Water Safety
Home for the Holidays?
Designate a Water Watcher
Florida is fortunate to experience warm weather year-round and during the holidays, friends and family gather at home to celebrate. Prevent a tragedy this holiday season by assigning an adult water watcher to monitor the pool and/or any water body around your home. It only takes a second for a child to find their way to the water and a potentially dangerous situation.

A water watcher is someone that can devote their undivided attention to the water source whether it’s to monitor the use of a swimming pool or a backyard lake. Adults can switch out of the post periodically to give everyone a chance to enjoy the gathering, while also safeguarding your home from a possible drowning event.

REMEMBER: Drowning is preventable.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR VISIT WHEN THE TEMPERATURES BEGIN TO DIP:

Brown Bears

The bears love the cooler weather. At the Big Bear exhibit, you can see our bachelor bears wrestling together, splashing in their pool, or just hanging out.

FUN FACT: Our bears don't need to hibernate because they have a constant food source.

Sea Lion

The California sea lions also enjoy the weather at this time of year. Find them barking, splashing, and basking at the heart of the zoo in Astor Court.

FUN FACT: Sea lion feeding and training sessions are held daily at 3 PM.

Tree Kangaroo

When you need to warm up, head to JungleWorld and the exotic rainforests of Asia to encounter ebony langurs, majestic leopards, gibbons, tapirs, and much more!

FUN FACT: Be on the lookout for our tree kangaroo joey, who has begun to spend extended periods outside of mom, Polly's, pouch!

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT DURING YOUR VISIT TO OUR PARKS

WCS parks provide families with a safe recreational space to enjoy! In order to manage the capacity at our parks, all guests, including WCS Members, must have a timed ticket for entry. Please note that policies are subject to change, and all guests must abide by the park rules in effect on the date of visit. Always check the Know Before You Go page on our website for the most up to date information.

Outdoor activities are weather-dependent and may be revised or canceled due to rain. Program is also subject to unforeseen conditions including weather, mechanical, safety, capacity, crowding, and/or animal-related considerations. All schedules are subject to change. Parking at the Bronx Zoo can fill to capacity on peak attendance days. Whenever possible, we recommend alternate modes of travel, such as mass transit or car service. Review parking directions and information about possible alternative parking in the area so you are prepared in case of lot closure.
