National Wildlife Federation
Four Elements to be a Certified Wildlife Habitat
Certifying your garden or yard as a Wildlife Habitat is as easy as 1, 2, 3 … and 4. All you need to do is use native plants that provide local wildlife with four key elements to thrive. They need FOOD, WATER, COVER, and SHELTER to raise their young. Luckily, most native plants will provide some combination of those elements. Not only will your home be certified as a Wildlife Habitat, but you’ll also help us reach Community Wildlife Habitat status.
Tequesta Trace Players Get Some Shade
Here in South Florida, you have to plan for heat and sunlight, but on those long hot tournament days, the heat can feel overwhelming for athletes. Luckily, our Parks team is always looking for ways to improve your experience in our City parks. That’s why they’ve successfully installed a new shade system on the multi-purpose fields at Tequesta Trace Park. Staying cool can make all the difference on those hot days, so be sure your young athlete takes advantage of the shade the next time you’re out at Tequesta Trace.
Presidents' Day Holiday
Monday, February 21
Initially a day to honor George Washington, Presidents' Day has expanded to celebrate the successes of all our nation's chief executives. Florida is the largest state to have not produced a United States president, while eight have come from Virginia.

All City administrative offices (including City Hall, the Community Center, the Public Works Services Center, and the Building Department) will be closed on Monday, February 21 in observance of Presidents’ Day.

City parks will be open and will follow regular operating hours.
There will be regular garbage and recycling service.
Celebrate the Seasons at Weston World Fest!
Sunday, March 6 | 12 to 4 p.m.
The award-winning seventh annual Weston World Fest is returning to Regional Park on Sunday, March 6 with a celebration of the “Seasons” featuring twenty interactive booths that will display their unique interpretation of this year’s theme, highlighting seasonal celebrations from around the world. Younger attendees will enjoy the return of the Passport Program, allowing children to enjoy a tour of the world and receive free tickets for activities such as henna art, balloon art and airbrush tattoos, based on the number of countries they visit.

Food vendors will offer authentic international cuisine, hosted by area restaurants. Entrance to the festival is free; food and beverages are available for purchase.
Spring Food Needs List for Harvest Drive
Help When and If You Can
It is an unfortunate reality that Harvest Drive has turned from an annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to a year-round food supplier for families in need within our schools and community.

Due to limitations of what they can get from their suppliers, they are asking the public for the following items: cereal, powdered milk, pancake mix, macaroni & cheese, soup, peanut butter, jelly, applesauce, pasta, rice, boxed mashed potatoes, cookies & crackers and canned vegetables, black beans and pasta sauce. No glass jars please.

Donations can be dropped off at outside bins at Weston City Hall, Community Center or Fire Station 81.
YMCA Swimsuit Drive
Did you know that South Florida leads the nation in children drowning ages one through four? Kids who take formal lessons are 88% less likely to drown. Help out by donating new swimsuits, of any size and for any age, today. Drop your donations at the front desk of the Weston YMCA.
Are You or a Loved One in Need of Assistance During an Emergency?
Vulnerable Population and Special Needs Registry
If you or a loved one might be in need of assistance during an emergency or local disaster, such as a hurricane, it is important to register with Broward County. Registering for the Vulnerable Population registry or the State's Special Needs Registry does not guarantee services, but it will make the county and the City of Weston (or wherever your loved one resides) aware of the potential need for services should a local emergency or disaster impact our area. Click the link below to learn more about both programs.
Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month Workshop
Parents and their children ages 11 and over, are invited to join the Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month workshops designed to increase awareness of teen dating violence and healthy relationship behaviors to spark proactive and responsible conversations between parents and their children.

The last presentation of the workshop series will take place on February 22 at 5:30 p.m. with a discussion panel and tabling event. This virtual discussion panel will be between youth, parents and community members about the topics discussed in the series, featuring various organizations who will provide access to community resources.

Students will be eligible to receive community service hours for attending.

Last day to register is Monday, February 21 at 6 p.m.

Live Vape Free
Broward Digital Program for Teens
Did you know that e-cigarettes continue to be the most used tobacco product among teens? In Florida, 12.8% of youth use e-cigarettes. Tobacco Free Florida in Broward County has rolled out their Live Vape Free text-based program for teens (ages 13 to 17). The program provides text-support, interactive content, and one-on-one coaching to help teens quit e-cigarettes. The program adapts to the teen’s level of engagement and features content such as tips to quit, boost confidence and motivate teens to quit and stay nicotine-free.

Join us online for a discussion about the impact of the Groveland Four on Florida's history with Accidental Activist: Justice For The Groveland Four author Josh Venkataraman, who led the charge for the Groveland Four's posthumous pardons, which came 70 years later, Gilbert King, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America, and Carol Greenlee, who spent decades working to clear the name of her father, one of the Groveland Four. BRANCH SPOTLIGHT

Miami Lakes Branch Library

The Miami Lakes Branch Library was the first Miami-Dade Public Library System branch to serve residents of northwest Miami-Dade County.

Originally known as the Miami Lakes/Palm Springs North Branch Library when it opened in 1981, the branch became a community hub for residents of the surrounding neighborhoods of Miami Lakes, Palm Springs North, Country Club of Miami, Hialeah Gardens and Carol City.

In this week's Branch Spotlight, we explore the history of the Miami Lakes Branch Library.

Tell Us Your Library Story

LIBRARY STORY

We're really enjoying your library stories as we continue to celebrate our 50th anniversary, like this one from Amarilys, a patron at Main Library

"For me the library represents an escape, a refuge and a sanctuary. My first memory of the library was being impressed by how beautiful and massive the library was. Imagine me, a little kid, stepping foot into what I assumed was a castle. I applied to obtain my library card. That’s where my love for reading developed. The children's center hosted many snacks, free tutoring and help with homework. All of the library's assistance helped my single, working mother tremendously. As a first-generation Nicaraguan American, the library offered a look into a different world – a world full of possibilities. It helped me expand my mind and my potential and for that I’m forever grateful."

We'd love to hear your story. Click here to share your favorite library memory or experience with us.

Latoya Darbeau

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

A Passion for Connecting Patrons to Technology

For Librarian Latoya Darbeau, making technology more accessible to the community is the highlight of her 13-year Library career.

Technology is one the many passions she has incorporated into her work since joining the Library System in 2007. She started as a librarian intern at the Golden Glades Branch Library and earned a master’s degree in library science in 2008. Over the next few years, Latoya worked at various branches and even helped open the newly built Naranja Branch Library in 2009. She also oversaw the children's and young adult departments at the South Dade and Miami Beach Regional Libraries.

Now the Branch Manager of Culmer/Overtown Branch Library, Latoya is a passionate library advocate and serves on several committees, including the Library’s social services committee, helping to connect residents experiencing homelessness to support services, and the Black History Month committee, developing ideas to provide patrons with programs and events during Black History Month in February.

Latoya says her greatest achievement is being part of the grant writing team that was awarded funding for tablets with built-in wireless internet that can be borrowed from the library for 30 days at a time, just like a book or a DVD. This program is part of the Library’s Community Internet Connectivity Initiative, which also includes Wi-Fi hotspots and Drive-up Wi-Fi.

“Knowing that I played a significant role in bridging the gap in the digital divide for Miami-Dade County residents is a rewarding feeling," said Latoya, whose interests also include crafting, reading and community service. “I also love applying my creativity to programs like holiday crafts and the Urban Lit Club, which offer more great opportunities to get engage with the community.”
