Message from the Mayor: State of our City Miami Beach

Facebook ‌ Twitter ‌ Instagram ‌
Last week at the New World Center I delivered the State of the City Address, a template of where we are today and what is on the horizon.

The Address discussed the state of our City's finances, including a $16.4 million budget surplus; the 30 acres of new parks in the queue; new community policing initiatives; our greatly expanded cultural programming; and education initiatives like our STEAM Plus program. The Address also features an honest discussion of our resiliency and transit challenges, and approaches to our Entertainment District.

So while the state of our City is strong and getting stronger, there is real work still to be done.

Thanks for the honor of serving as your Mayor.

Spring into Action Against Hazardous Waste

Spring into Action Against Hazardous Waste
Leon County holds Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection
WHO:             Leon County
WHAT:            Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection
WHEN:           Saturday, March 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE:         Public Works Operations Center, 2280 Miccosukee Road
Leon County residents can spring into action by disposing of old paint, chemicals, cleaners and other household hazardous waste items on Saturday, March 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Public Works Operations Center, located at the corner of Blair Stone Road and Miccosukee Road. Improper disposal of hazardous waste, through curbside pickup or dumping, can lead to harmful pollutants infiltrating our local ecosystem.
Leon County Solid Waste is dedicated to decreasing toxic waste in landfills through monthly Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collection events. So far this season, over 2,000 citizen superheroes have correctly disposed of nearly 36 tons of hazardous waste, setting multiple records. Citizen superheroes may bring up to 100 pounds of hazardous waste per vehicle, in addition to electronics. Accepted items include:
  • Household items such as aerosols, nail polish and remover, hair color, spot remover and fluorescent bulbs (limit of 25 fluorescent tubes per vehicle);
  • Cleaners such as oven and drain cleaners, floor-care products, ammonia, metal and furniture polish, bleach or rust remover;
  • Garage items such as motor oil, gasoline, fuel oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, paint, stains and mercury thermometers;
  • Batteries of all types including alkaline, rechargeable, watch and car batteries;
  • Electronics such as phones, printers and ink cartridges, computers, fax machines, CDs, VHS tapes, cassettes and televisions (only one large-screen television per vehicle).
For a full list of accepted items, please visit: LeonCountyFL.gov/HHW.
Propane tanks must weigh less than 40 pounds and tire drop-offs are limited to one per participant. Items that cannot be accepted include:
  • Medical items such as sharps, medicines and radioactive waste. Learn about proper disposal of these items at LeonCountyFL.gov/Medical-Waste.
  • Bulky items such as appliances (refrigerators, stoves/ovens, washing machines, dryers, etc.), furniture, yard waste, construction and demolition debris, household garbage or Styrofoam.
Due to limited space, loads over 100 pounds will be directed to the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center, located at 7550 Apalachee Parkway. Neighborhood groups or other large groups are discouraged from combining large amounts of items into a single vehicle due to safety concerns regarding transporting large amounts of unsecured hazardous materials.
Additionally, citizens may visit the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center during normal business hours – Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Businesses must call for appointments. Learn more at LeonCountyFL.gov/SeriousBusiness.
For more information, call the Leon County Hazardous Waste Center at (850) 606-1803 or visit LeonCountyFL.gov/HHW for the complete collection schedule and safe packing guide.
