Hurricane Ian Update - Tuesday, Sept. 27

 

The City of Miami Beach has declared a State of Emergency as Hurricane Ian is expected to impact the city with tropical storm conditions, including flooding in low-lying areas and strong wind gusts.  The Miami Beach Division of Emergency Management is monitoring Hurricane Ian, which is forecast to be a major hurricane as it moves over the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Major rainfall is expected throughout South Florida through Thursday morning and Miami Beach is under a Flood Watch until Thursday. A Tornado Watch is currently in effect through 5 p.m. today. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Miami-Dade County, which means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area.    Although Miami Beach is not within the forecasted cone of concern, any shift to the east in the forecast track could increase our risk of hazardous conditions, including flooding which may be exacerbated by king tides. King tides are expected from today, Sept. 27 through Friday, Sept. 30.  If you come across any flooding that obstructs access or causes damage to public or private property, please report it through the Miami Beach e-Gov app, call 305.673.7625 or email flooding@miamibeachfl.gov.  For updated information, visit www.miamibeachfl.gov/stormready.

Parking Garages Open to Residents Due to the potential of heavy rainfall from Hurricane Ian combined with king tides, the Parking Department will open municipal garages for residents wishing to keep their cars, motorcycles or scooters out of flood-prone areas. The garages at the Miami Beach Convention Center (1901 Convention Center Dr.), 5 St. and Alton Rd. (550 Lenox Ave.), as well as City Hall (1755 Meridian Ave.) will not be included.   Residents may park vehicles tonight, Sept. 27 beginning at 5 p.m. through Thursday, Sept. 29 until 8 p.m. free of charge. Residents must provide proof of residency when exiting the parking facility. Parks & Recreation All outdoor Parks and Recreation programs will be canceled Wednesday, Sept. 28 and Thursday, Sept. 29 due to inclement weather in the forecast. Indoor activities will continue as scheduled, including day care for youth enrolled in the city’s after-school program.   Public Meetings Both the City Commission and Land Use and Sustainability meetings scheduled for tomorrow, Sept. 28 will still be held. Waste Connections, which services single-family and bulk pickup, will operate their normal scheduled route tomorrow, Sept. 28. Recycling pickup tomorrow, Sept. 28 will continue as planned.   Building Inspections Building inspections will continue tomorrow, Sept. 28 until weather conditions deteriorate.   Public Works In addition to the city’s existing stormwater infrastructure that includes 48 permanent pump stations, the Public Works Department has deployed temporary pumps in areas prone to severe flooding with generators on standby. The stormwater team has cleaned the entire storm drain system, including pump stations. Additional resources are available around-the-clock for the next several days. The Sanitation Division also has debris removal contractors on standby for rapid deployment as needed.    Drawbridges The U.S. Coast Guard does not anticipate ordering drawbridge lockdowns at this time.   Arts & Culture Miami Beach OnStage events on Thursday, Sept. 29 and Friday, Sept. 30 have been postponed. The Bass is closed Wednesday, Sept. 28 and the Miami Beach Bandshell will be closed through Friday, Sept. 30.

Flood Safety Tips Avoid coming into contact with floodwaters. There may be hazards like pollutants and debris that are not visible.  Avoid driving through floodwaters for your safety and to avoid vehicle damage. Document and share any property and roadway flooding by calling 305.673.7625 and emailing flooding@miamibeachfl.gov.  Remember, flooding brings standing water. Check around your personal property - if you see standing water for more than 48 hours, call the MB Control Room at 305.673.7625. Always drain and cover!

How to Prepare for a Storm Now is the time to review your hurricane plan with members of your household. Visit our hurricane preparedness webpage for tips on how to stay safe this hurricane season. Residents can help to minimize impacts to our stormwater system by keeping manhole covers closed, and decreasing water use in the morning and evening – which are the heaviest usage times – during heavy rain.    Remove All Yard Decor Remove all yard furniture and decor, this is necessary to prevent projectiles during a storm from affecting your home or neighbor's home. The city is encouraging residents to take down these items now and only place them back after the storm has passed. Tree Trimming Residents that wish to maintain their trees and landscaping prior to the city being under a tropical watch and/or warning should utilize the Green Waste Facility located at 2800 Meridian Avenue, the hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and closed on Sundays. Construction Activities In the event of a watch or warning, all contractors will be instructed to secure their work zones in preparation for the storm. Register Vulnerable Populations Is there someone in your family who is unable to evacuate on their own? Maybe they're elderly or have special needs. We encourage you to have them sign up for the Emergency Evacuation Assistance Program (EEAP) provided by Miami-Dade County.
