CITY OF WESTON

NEWS FROM THE CITY OF WESTON
June 14, 2022
Next Regular City Commission Meeting: Tuesday, June 21, 2022
Juneteenth Freedom Day | June 19
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and the realization of the belief that "all men are created equal." Though many of us may recognize the Emancipation Proclamation (1863) as the symbolic end of slavery, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that the last slaves were freed in Galveston, Texas. The institution would be officially abolished in December of that year, with the adoption of the 13th Amendment.

At last week’s Commission meeting, the City recognized via proclamation that "Juneteenth has come to symbolize for many African Americans what the Fourth of July means for all Americans - Freedom. It serves as a historical milestone reminding Americans of the triumph of the human spirit over the cruelty of slavery."

Parks Master Plan in Progress
Online Surveys Coming Soon
The City of Weston Parks and Recreation Department is developing a Parks and Recreation Master Plan that will guide the department's operations and facility development over the next ten years. The purpose of the Master Plan is to determine the need for improvements to existing parks, facilities, and programs, and to help identify priorities for new facilities, trails, programs, and recreational services.

A key part to the process is public input. Share your ideas by attending the public workshops and completing the surveys when available. The first public workshop was held on June 9 at the Community Center. Surveys were also mailed out to a random sampling of Weston addresses. If you received a survey in the mail, be sure to participate by completing it. An online survey will soon be made available to all residents online. Stay tuned to the process by clicking the link below.

Rainy Season = Mosquito Season
Mosquitoes love the summer rain. After a heavy rainfall, be sure to empty out any standing water around your home or yard to avoid mosquito breeding. Draining items like birdbaths, plant pots, and even garbage and recycling carts will help reduce mosquito activity around your home. If mosquitoes are in force, make a request to Broward County Mosquito Control. They will prioritize treatment in the communities with the most requests.
