Advisory: West Avenue Temporary Bike Lane

West Avenue Temporary Bike Lane
Project Advisory: December 31, 2020
Project Overview and Benefits
As bicycling continues to grow in the City of Miami Beach, providing safe facilities has become key to sustain this growth. Some of the premier bicycle lanes in Miami Beach include the Venetian Causeway, 16 Street, and the new protected bike lanes on Washington Avenue. As the City continues to grow its network, one important gap to close is the lack of separated bicycle lanes on West Avenue between 16 Street and Lincoln Road.

The goal of this project is to fill this key gap, allowing residents and visitors (all cyclists) to easily connect between the City of Miami and the City of Miami Beach Art Deco Cultural District. Having this continuous bike lane connectivity means that bicycle trips can begin in Downtown Miami, use the Venetian Causeway to West Avenue southbound, connect east/west on 17 Street or 16 Street, and end on Washington Avenue - or vice versa. Given that the West Avenue Neighborhood Enhancements should be under construction by the end of 2021, the City is planning to implement interim bicycles lanes on the 1600 block of West Avenue to complete the connection.

What's Happening
Interim bicycle lanes will be installed on both the northbound and southbound sides of West Avenue, between 16 Street and Lincoln Road. Work will be completed using temporary striping (road paint). The implementation of the bike lanes will result in the loss of seven parking spaces. This loss will be mitigated within the existing public parking lot on this block.

What to Expect
• One lane at a time, in two-hour increments, may be closed during bike lane installation.
• Work hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; extended time is subject to city approval and community notification.
• The project will take approximately one week for completion.
• Please note, schedules may change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
• The project team is closely monitoring the situation surrounding COVID-19. The contractor is enforcing strict social distancing measures and employees are using face covers while on site, including during break times.
