NEWS FROM THE CITY OF WESTON September 12, 2023  ‌  ‌  ‌ Next Regular City Commission Meeting: Tomorrow - Wednesday, September 13 (includes First Budget Hearing for FY2024) Honoring the Lives of Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson and Lurean Wheaton Join us as we remember and honor the lives of two individuals who tragically lost their lives on August 28, 2023. On Friday, September 8, a public Line of Duty Memorial was held to pay tribute to BSO Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Terryson Jackson, who perished in a helicopter crash, while responding to an emergency call with two of his BSFR colleagues. Additionally, we remember Lurean Wheaton, a 65-year-old resident of the Pompano Beach apartment where the accident occurred. Our deepest condolences go out to their families, friends, and colleagues. These are just a few tips, but click the link below for more.     Protect your windows. If you do not have hurricane impact-rated windows or doors, be sure to put up shutters if a hurricane watch is issued for our area. If you do not have shutters, make arrangements now for possible window coverings, such as plywood secured to your home’s exterior walls. Plywood and other supplies will be difficult to purchase once a hurricane watch goes into effect.   Bring loose items inside, including any lawn furniture, BBQ grills, garbage/recycling carts, hanging plants, bird feeders, lawn decorations, etc. that may be blown around by heavy winds.   Do not trim trees prior to a storm’s arrival. Piles of branches will become projectiles and garbage/trash pickup may be postponed during high winds. The Inside Out Theatre, a musical theatre production class is coming to the Weston Community Center. South Beach Slam Pickleball Tournament comes to Miami Beach Players in the November 17-19, 2023 amateur doubles tournament will need a DUPR rating to compete.

Get ready for the South Beach Slam – Miami Beach’s first amateur doubles pickleball tournament.   Whether you are a pickleball all-star or a newbie looking to smash your way to Miami Beach glory, the South Beach Slam has something for everyone.    This is a doubles-only tournament, so sign up with a partner or as a single and we will pair you with a player of your same skill level. To ensure fair play across the board, players should have a DUPR rating prior to registering, and must have one by Friday, October 27 to allow plenty of time for tournament scheduling. Not sure of your rating? No problem – sign up for your free DUPR Account at mydupr.com and log as many matches as possible and let the app do the rest.   For those registering as a duo, the partner with the higher DUPR rating determines the bracket. As an example, if you’re a 3.8 and your partner is a 3.1, then 3.5 is the correct spot. If you are registering as a single entrant, please be sure to have your DUPR rating confirmed prior to registration to ensure you are placed in the correct skill bracket. Teams or individuals who are in the wrong bracket will need to be moved to a correct bracket, provided there is adequate space.    We anticipate this event selling out quickly! As such, we highly suggest registering for a DUPR account today so you are ready when the registration window opens. Registration details will be made public via email and on the City of Miami Beach’s social media channels in the upcoming days.
