El Día de la Conmemoración de los Caídos (“Memorial Day”) se celebra el último lunes de mayo para honrar a quienes fallecieron sirviendo en las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos y fue declarado festivo federal por el Congreso en 1971.

Florida es el estado del Sol. Este soleado estado del sur de los Estados Unidos es uno de los lugares más visitados del país. Aquí, podremos disfrutar de sus espectaculares parques de atracciones, tomar en sol en sus playas infinitas o maravillarnos con la naturaleza de sus parques naturales. Hoy os traigo algunas curiosidades de este maravilloso lugar…

1- A pesar de su tamaño, Florida es uno de los estados más poblados de Estados Unidos. En este momento, cuenta con más de 21 millones de habitantes, casi la mitad que todo nuestro país.

2- En Florida no nos costará demasiado oír hablar español. No solo podremos encontrar sangre hispana en Miami, los hispanos ocupan aproximadamente el 25 por ciento de la población total de este estado.

3- Florida está literalmente rodeada de naturaleza. Miami, la ciudad más importante de este estado, es la única zona metropolitana del país delimitada por dos parques nacionales: los Everglades y el parque nacional de Biscayne.

4- Este estado del sur de Estados Unidos fue el primer territorio de este país que fue visitado por los europeos.

5- Florida cuenta con una flor silvestre oficial, la coreopsis. Esta flor se planta a ambos lados de las carreteras con fines decorativos, puesto que podemos encontrarlas en una gran variedad de colores.

6- Florida debe su nombre al conquistador español Juan Ponce de León, que la bautizó así por la inmensa cantidad de flores que encontró tras su desembarco.

7- Aunque no lo creáis, fue en Florida donde se inventó algo tan popular y utilizado como la crema bronceadora. Su creador fue el farmacéutico Benjamin Green en 1944.

8- Si quieres tomar el sol y disfrutar del buen tiempo, las ciudades de San Petersburgo y Clearwater cuentan con un promedio de 361 días soleados al año.

9- Aunque Florida es llamada normalmente como “Sunshine State” (el estado del sol), no es el estado más soleado de los Estados Unidos. El más soleado es Arizona, compuesto principalmente de desierto, y el segundo es Nevada, donde se encuentra Las Vegas.

10- ¿Existen las sirenas? Esta criatura de leyenda lleva siglos protagonizando las aventuras de los más intrépidos marineros. Se cree que su origen está en los manatíes del Condado Manatí, en el sur de Florida. En este lugar podremos ver estos apacibles animales marinos.

11- El caimán es el reptil oficial del estado desde el año 1987.

12- En la costa este de Florida se encuentra el famoso Cabo Cañaveral. Este lugar es la plataforma de lanzamiento de vuelos espaciales de los Estados Unidos.

13- La piedra oficial del estado de Florida es la Piedra Lunar. Curiosamente, es imposible encontrar esta piedra en Florida, ni tampoco en la luna.

14- Cayo Largo, en el sur del estado, es conocido como la capital mundial del buceo.

15- La ciudad de Key West es la ciudad que se encuentra más al sur de todo Estados Unidos.

16- Florida es un estado de sol y playas. Este estado cuenta con más de trece mil kilómetros de arena. Únicamente le supera Alaska, y ahí os aseguro que no contaréis con tan buen tiempo…

17- Orlando es la ciudad con parques de atracciones más visitada de los Estados Unidos. Esta es la ciudad de la diversión donde cada año acuden turistas de todo el país y del resto del mundo.

Your Miami Beach Memorial Day Weekend checklist!

 

Memorial Day weekend rumbles into Miami Beach this year with the return of the popular Hyundai Air & Sea Show on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29. Check out the guide below so you can be aware of the traffic impacts and enjoy all of the weekend's events safely. In preparation for the holiday weekend, the city has been planning diligently to implement a comprehensive and coordinated plan to ensure residents and visitors are able to enjoy the beach and various events, while maintaining safety and resident quality of life. EVENTS Hyundai Air & Sea Show “The Greatest Show Above the Earth” showcases the men, women, technology and equipment from all five branches of the United States Military as well as our police, firefighters and their first responder agencies. This free program aims to give parents, guardians and caretakers greater peace of mind. Children and adults with special needs will receive a free ID wristband with their name, guardian’s name and contact information. The stations will be located in City of Miami Beach tents staffed by Goodwill Ambassadors. Look for portable signs in front of the tents. The Goodwill Ambassadors will maintain a spreadsheet with the names of each child or adult who registers. Sunday, May 29 5 PM - 7 PM Liberty Plaza 2200 Liberty Avenue TRAFFIC IMPACTS An evening traffic mitigation plan will be implemented on Thursday, May 26 through Monday, May 30 beginning at 6 p.m. Traffic will only be allowed to enter Ocean Drive through 13 Street and exit through 5 Street, with no access to any other entry/exit points. Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue will flow north and southbound, with no east or westbound access except for 5 Street and 16 Street. Protected residential zones for the Flamingo Park and South of Fifth neighborhoods will be in place each evening from 6 p.m. through 4:30 a.m. starting on Thursday, May 26 through Monday, May 30 with barricades in place to restrict cut-through traffic in these residential areas. Flamingo Park and South of Fifth residents are encouraged to use Alton Road to enter and exit their neighborhood. There will be enhanced police presence in other surrounding neighborhoods. During hours when the traffic mitigation plan is in place, the Miami Beach trolley service and Miami-Dade County bus service will operate normally. The city’s trolley tracker “Rider Alert” feature will be updated as needed to reflect service changes and important updates. Beginning on Friday through Sunday evenings starting at 9 p.m., License Plate Readers (LPRs) will also be deployed on the 5 Street corridor. To accommodate this LPR operation, there will be a lane reduction on the MacArthur Causeway’s eastbound bridge. PARKING Effective Friday, May 27 at 7 p.m., a flat parking rate of $20 per vehicle will be imposed at all city parking garages in the Art Deco Cultural District (ADCD) except for access card holders and residents. This includes garages at 7 Street and Collins Avenue, 12 Street and Washington Avenue, 13 Street and Collins Avenue as well as the Anchor Garage on 16 Street. The $20 rate is good for a single entrance and exit. No in/out access will be permitted during this time. On-street parking will be prohibited along Collins Avenue between 5 Street and Española Way commencing on Wednesday, May 25 at 6 p.m. through Tuesday, May 26 at 6 a.m. Additionally, the 100 and 200 blocks between 6 Street and 16 Streets will be restricted to Residential Zone 5 permit holders only between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. The parking lot on the northwest corner of 10 Street and Washington Avenue (P13) will be unavailable from Friday morning starting at 6 a.m. through Monday at 6 a.m. Use the free, Park Me—Miami Beach app to find parking near the events. Please don’t circle the block looking for parking. The mobile app shows you available parking and rates for lots and garages, including real-time capacity information for certain facilities.  There are numerous ways to get around Miami Beach on public transportation once you arrive, including free Miami Beach trolleys and Citi Bike. Free Parking Shuttles The city will provide free shuttle service to and from four designated event parking garage locations. Please look for the special parking shuttle identification signs prior to boarding and use the Miami Beach e-Gov app to track shuttle service in real-time under Trolley tracker. Parking shuttles will operate on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at intervals of approximately 15 minutes. Designated pickup locations are as follows: 42 Street garage: shuttle will serve trolley stop #219 at Sheridan Avenue and 41 Street.   23 Street garage: shuttle will serve trolley stop #194 at 23 Street and Liberty Avenue. 17 Street, Pennsylvania Avenue and the City Hall garages: shuttle will serve trolley stop #200 at 17 Street and Convention Center Drive. 5 Street garage: shuttle will serve trolley stop #113 at 6 Street and Lenox Avenue. All passengers using the free shuttle service will be dropped off at trolley stop #106 located at Washington Avenue and 11 Street. Passengers should use this stop for their ride back to garages. Alternatively, passengers can use the free citywide trolley service. ADDITIONAL PREPARATIONS Miami Beach Police will be working 13-hour shifts with an Alpha/Bravo staffing configuration. Several inter-jurisdictional and federal law enforcement partners will be assisting MBPD with crowd control, including Miami-Dade County PD and Miami-Dade County School Board PD. Miami Beach Fire and Ocean Rescue will also have augmented staffing throughout the weekend.   More than 150 Goodwill Ambassadors wearing branded “Take Care of Our City” pink t-shirts will be deployed throughout the ADCD to answer visitor questions, provide directions and give tips on how to enjoy the city.    The following special measures will be in effect at 7 a.m. Friday, May 27 through 7 a.m. Monday, May 30, 2022 along the public beach; the MXE mixed used entertainment district (excluding that portion of the MXE district between 73 and 75 streets) and that portion of the CD-2 commercial, medium-intensity district between Pennsylvania Avenue and Collins Court from 5 to 16 streets: All direct or indirect consumption of alcohol will be prohibited on public beaches unless specifically authorized by a special event permit or a concession agreement. Local access restrictions will be enforced on some city streets to limit traffic and improve mobility for residents and business patrons. LPR police details will be focused on eastbound traffic lanes on the 5 Street corridor. The issuance of a business tax receipt to promoters for any dance or entertainment events to be held at an alcoholic beverage establishment located in the MXE and CD-2 districts will be suspended. The suspension and closure of business entities renting or leasing certain vehicles — including golf carts, low-speed vehicles, autocycles, motorized scooters, mopeds, motorcycles powered by motors of 50cc or less and motorized bicycles. The following additional measures may be imposed as necessary: Limitations may be placed on live or amplified music. The citywide suspension and closure of all or part of sidewalk café operations located in the MXE and CD-2 districts each night (including the removal of any sidewalk café furniture).
