La FTC envía casi $50 millones de dólares en reembolsos a estudiantes de la Universidad de Phoenix

 

Se enviaron más de 147,000 reembolsos a estudiantes afectados por los anuncios engañosos de la escuela La Comisión Federal de Comercio (FTC, por su sigla en inglés) está enviando pagos por un total aproximado de $50 millones de dólares a más de 147,000 estudiantes de la Universidad de Phoenix (UOP) que pueden haber sido atraídos por anuncios presuntamente engañosos. Los reembolsos provienen de una demanda judicial que entabló la FTC contra la UOP alegando que esta universidad usó anuncios engañosos que promocionaban falsamente sus relaciones y oportunidades de empleo con compañías como AT&T, Yahoo!, Microsoft, Twitter y la Cruz Roja Americana. La FTC también alegó que la publicidad de la UOP daba la impresión de que la escuela en línea trabajaba con esas compañías para crear oportunidades de empleo para sus estudiantes y adaptar sus planes de estudio para dichos empleos. Además de los casi $50 millones de dólares asignados a pagos directos para los estudiantes, el acuerdo por $191 millones de dólares incluye $141 millones que se asignarán a la cancelación de los saldos impagos adeudados directamente a la escuela por los estudiantes elegibles. Este acuerdo no afecta otras deudas, como los préstamos estudiantiles federales y privados o beneficios militares. Detección de correos electrónicos fraudulentos

Supongamos que recibes un correo electrónico relacionado con un cargo aplicado en tu tarjeta de crédito por algo que no compraste o no quieres. Tu primer instinto puede ser llamar de inmediato a la empresa o responder al correo electrónico y detener el pago. Los estafadores lo saben y se están aprovechando de esto mediante un nuevo esquema de phishing o pesca de información.

Diversas personas nos han informado que están recibiendo correos electrónicos que parecen ser de Norton, una empresa dedicada a la venta de programas de antivirus y antimalware. (Dato: los correos electrónicos NO son de Norton). En los correos electrónicos indican a las personas que les han cobrado (o están a punto cobrar) un producto Norton, tal vez una renovación automática o un nuevo pedido. En el correo también indican que si se trata de un error debe llamar de inmediato a la compañía. (Consejo: no lo hagas).

Si llamas, te conectarás con un estafador. Algunos estafadores te pueden pedir que “verifiques” la información de tu tarjeta de crédito, mientras que otros pueden decir que necesitan tu contraseña para ingresar de manera remota en tu computadora para poder eliminar el programa Norton. Si los dejas ingresar en tu computadora, podrían instalar un malware, bloquear tu acceso a tus propios archivos y venderte servicios inútiles

Si recibe un correo electrónico o un mensaje de texto, y no te genera seguridad su procedencia:

No hagas clic en ningún enlace.

No llames al número que figura en el correo electrónico o mensaje de texto. Si deseas llamar a la empresa que supuestamente envió el mensaje, busca su número de teléfono en línea.

Recuerda:

Nunca entregues tu contraseña por teléfono a un extraño, incluso si dice ser de una empresa que reconoces.

Si entregaste tu contraseña, cámbiala de inmediato, actualiza el programa de seguridad de tu computadora, ejecuta un escaneo y elimina todo lo que identifiques como problemático.

Utiliza contraseñas seguras y actualízalas de manera regular.

No entregues por teléfono información de tu cuenta bancaria, tarjeta de crédito o información personal a alguien que se comunique contigo de manera inesperada.

Y si recibes un correo electrónico falso como este, ayuda a tu comunidad y repórtalo a la FTC en ReporteFraude.ftc.gov.
