As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread globally, Leon County Emergency Management is committed to actively monitoring the disease and coordinating preparedness and response efforts with local health officials, healthcare providers, first responders and other critical emergency response functions.

The following update provides a timely, accurate and vetted source of official County and community information.

Significant Changes Since Last Update

  • The FAMU-Bond COVID-19 testing site at Bragg Memorial Stadium adjusts hours of operation. Starting Thursday, September 17, The testing site will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Daily testing capacity remains unchanged.
  • Leon County Clerk of Court resumes in-person services at NE Branch. Available services include payment of traffic citations and court ordered costs, acceptance of passport applications, passport photos, marriage licenses, recording of mortgages and deeds and obtaining certified copies of court and official records.   • Leon County launches Leon CARES program to provide local assistance to individuals, businesses and human service agencies impacted by COVID-19. For eligibility requirements and to submit an application to receive assistance, visit www.LeonCountyCARES.com
  • Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality (OEV) distributes cloth face coverings to businesses. Face coverings are available for pickup at the Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality. A business with one location is eligible for up to 100 face coverings. Local businesses with multiple locations are eligible for up to 200 face coverings.     • Office of Economic Vitality (315 S. Calhoun Street, Suite 110, Tallahassee, FL, 32301) Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • County offering free face coverings for pickup at all Libraries. Leon County continues to make free face coverings available for pickup at all County library locations during regular hours. Through the library program and with OEV, the County has distributed nearly 300,000 masks to citizens. Five face masks per individual will be allowed for pickup to ensure adequate supply to meet demand.  For locations and hours, visit www.LeonCountyLibrary.com
  • It’s Not Too Much to Mask Campaign. Leon County launched the social media campaign, It’s Not Too Much to Mask to encourage the use of masks and facial coverings in public. If you’d like to participate, post a masked-up selfie and share why you wear a mask and for whom using #MaskOnLeon.

COVID-19 by the Numbers. Global cases of COVID-19 now surpass 27 million. According to the Florida Department of Health (FDOH) there are or have been 7,943 positive cases of COVID-19 in Leon County. In Florida, there are or have been 650,092 positive cases of COVID-19, and 11,915 COVID-19-related deaths. These numbers are updated regularly by FDOH; visit the dashboard for more detailed information, here. Local testing date includes public and private tests performed in Leon County, including Antigen tests performed by Patients First.

Fall 2020

Sunny Isles Beach Live & Play is a new recreation guide featuring seasonal programs and events offered by the City of Sunny Isles Beach. Live & Play is available to view digitally below.
Our Cultural and Community Services Department is offering a curated season of fall programs for our youth, adults and seniors. Like most programming around the country, it’s going to look a little different. Our stellar recreation staff have been working for the last several months to bring programming to our residents that is both enriching and safe. Most programs will be virtual, with a select few in-person youth athletics, which will be held with special COVID-19 safety measures in place. Our goal is to minimize risk, while maximizing enrichment.

Personas deberían retener impuestos del desempleo para evitar sorpresa tributaria

Debido a la pandemia de Coronavirus, millones de estadounidenses recibieron o reciben compensación por desempleo, muchos de ellos por primera vez. Es importante que estas personas sepan que la compensación por desempleo es tributable.
Los contribuyentes pueden retener impuestos de sus beneficios ahora para ayudarlos a evitar adeudar impuestos sobre estos ingresos cuando presenten su declaración de impuestos el año entrante.
Por ley, estos beneficios son tributables y deben incluirse en una declaración de impuestos del año en que se recibieron. Los beneficios tributarios incluyen cualquiera de la compensación especial autorizada bajo la Ley de Ayuda, Alivio, y Seguridad Económica por Coronavirus.

La retención es voluntaria

La ley federal permite a los recipientes elegir retener un 10 por ciento fijo de sus beneficios para cubrir parte o la totalidad de su responsabilidad tributaria. Para hacer esto, deben completar el Formulario W-4V, Solicitud de retención voluntaria (en inglés), y entregárselo a la agencia que paga los beneficios. No envíe el formulario al IRS. Si el pagador tiene su propio formulario de solicitud de retención, úselo en su lugar.
Los recipientes que no elijan la retención voluntaria o si la retención no es suficiente, pueden hacer pagos de impuestos estimados. El pago de los dos primeros trimestres de 2020 venció el 15 de julio. El pago del tercer trimestre vence el 15 de septiembre de 2020 y el del cuarto trimestre el 15 de enero de 2021. Los contribuyentes pueden visitar IRS.gov para ver todas las opciones de pago .

Estos son algunos tipos de pagos para los cuales los contribuyentes deben verificar la retención:

  • Beneficios pagados por un estado o el Distrito de Columbia del Fondo Federal de Fideicomiso para Desempleo
  • Beneficios de compensación por desempleo para empleados ferroviarios
  • Beneficios por discapacidad pagados en sustitución de la compensación por desempleo
  • Concesiones por reajustes comerciales bajo la Ley de Comercio (Trade Law) de 1974
  • Asistencia por desempleo bajo la Ley de Asistencia para el Alivio en Desastres y Emergencias (Disaster Relief and Emergency Act) de 1974, y
  • Asistencia por desempleo bajo el Programa de la Ley de Desregulación de Aerolíneas de 1978 (Airline Deregulation Act of 1978 Program)
Los recipientes que regresan al trabajo antes de fin de año pueden usar el Estimador de Retención de Impuestos del IRS para asegurarse de que se les retenga la cantidad correcta de impuestos de su paga. Esta herramienta en línea está disponible solamente en IRS.gov, y puede ayudar a los trabajadores o beneficiarios de pensión a evitar o disminuir una factura de impuestos o también a estimar un reembolso. 

Reportar compensación por desempleo

En enero de 2021, los beneficiarios de desempleo deberán recibir un Formulario 1099-G, Ciertos pagos del gobierno (en inglés) de la agencia que pagó los beneficios. Este formulario indicará el monto de la compensación por desempleo que le pagaron durante 2020 y cualquier impuesto federal retenido. Los contribuyentes deben reportar esta información, además de cualquier otro ingreso en su declaración de impuestos federales de 2020.
