Save Water This Holiday Season

Tis the season to shop for holiday gifts, and saving water is a gift that rewards everyone. Water conservation is often thought of as a thing we do rather than a thing we give, but this holiday season it can be both. Watch this video to learn about five water-conserving gifts you can give this holiday season.

Beach and Coastal Cleanups
Beach and Coastal Cleanups are great ways to get outdoors and help our coastal state parks in a big way. Anastasia State Park features 4 miles of pristine beaches along the Atlantic Ocean coastline, and volunteering for a beach cleanup is a great way to make sure the park stays that way! Not only does a beach cleanup help keep the park clean for future guests to enjoy, but the removal of potentially harmful litter and debris can also protect the local wildlife. With 139 campsites within walking distance from the beach, Anastasia is a perfect park for rest and relaxation after a beach cleanup.

 Exotic Plant Removal

Exotic Plant Removal
Another critical way volunteers help Florida State Parks is through exotic and invasive plant removal. These projects, such as the removal of skunk vine from the entrance to the campgrounds at Rainbow Springs State Park, can help reduce potentially harmful allergens within our parks and protect the local plant life from being displaced by invasive species. The removal of the invasive skunk vine at Rainbow Springs allows the natural resources at the park’s scenic campgrounds to flourish. Taking a dip in the refreshing waters of the headspring is a great way to cool off after a day of volunteering.

Special Projects
Volunteers often have key roles in assisting with special projects within Florida State Parks, such as the installation of the new adaptive bike trails in Alafia River State Park. Volunteers assisted park staff in widening the bike trails and incorporating stabilizing shell material to accommodate adaptive bicycles year-round. Along with a 40-mile network of biking, hiking, and equestrian trails, Alafia River also features a full-facility campground so you can sleep under the stars! Come make your reservation today to experience a great example of what our volunteers can accomplish at Florida State Parks.

 Trail Clearing and Cleanup

Trail Clearing and Cleanup
Speaking of trails, volunteers play a big role in assisting park staff with the maintenance of many of the trails within Florida State Parks. At Wekiwa Springs State Park, volunteers helped clear and cleanup over 6 miles of trails in a single day! Their work included clearing debris, removing exotic plants, and reinforcing existing trail paths so that visitors to the park would be able to easily access and enjoy the natural resources these trails have to offer. As Orange County’s longest running tourist attraction, Wekiwa Springs’ campgrounds, picturesque spring, and over 25 miles of trails offer a variety of experiences for the whole family to enjoy!

Guided Tours
Not all of the volunteer opportunities at Florida State Parks require physical work outside. Many of the guided tours offered at our parks are led by dedicated volunteers, such as at the historic Koreshan Settlement at Koreshan State Park. Volunteers at Koreshan lead guests on an immersive journey through the daily lives of the Koreshan settlers and provide a first-hand experience of life in the area during the late-nineteenth century. To be fully immersed in the natural and cultural resources Koreshan and its volunteers have to offer, make a reservation to spend the night at the park’s tranquil campground! Also be sure to check out the unique bamboo trails or sample some of the traditional Koreshan cuisine at the Cast Iron Café.
